Drill machine can be count as one of needed power tools for your home. Although it is not frequently used, drill machine is a vital tool for almost many things, for example : to hang pictures, installing cloth hanger, install shower holder, towel hanger, installing or fixing furniture, etc.

To fullfill all of these, you need an impact drill machine. Impact drill machines are machines that have an impact when the drills are running. The impact makes drilling a wall much more easier to do. You have many options whenever you want to buy an impact drill. For home uses, impact drills features would be a small or bigger chuck bor ( usually 10mm (3/8″) or 13 mm (1/2″) ), reversible rotation or variable speeds. Some of brand or type impact drills sold bundled with drills bit, carrying case.

In Indonesia, there are so many brands of drilling machines, from professional uses to do-it-yourself uses, even lower quality. For the lowest class we have Nikkon, Norita, ATS, Modern, Krisbow, etc. For do-it-yourself uses we have GMT, Fujiyama, Skil, Maktec, Black and Decker, etc. For professional uses we have Makita, Bosch, Dewalt, Metabo, AEG, Hitachi, etc. They have a wide range of price, starting Rp. 100.000,- (about US$ 10) to Rp. 900.000,- (about US$ 90) even more.

From many brand, type, and features of drilling machines, which drills suit for your needs? I give you some tips for your consideration :

For home uses, usually you only need a small drill chuck (10 mm), since generally all home uses do not require holes that are bigger than 10mm. To drill walls, 10 to 13mm masonry drill bits, usually have a smaller arbor, so 10mm drill chuck should be enough. But that rules only appropriate for do-it-yourself or higher class. Since the lowest class drill chuck usually can only fit to 8 or 9 mm drill bits, even they said so on the technical specifications. To avoid that, if you want to buy the lowest class impact drills, you should buy an impact drill with 13mm drill chuck.

Almost all class can give you a complete features of reversible and variable speeds. Reversible and variabe speeds features, make easier for you do pull your drills, whenever they stucks in your drilling process. Much more, you can use these features to make your drills act as screwdriver machines. Since they can help you to tighting or loosening your screw. But you need to be cautioned, that the more features they had, the more possiblity it will be broken, esspecially the reversible switch. Also, variable speeds features would also shorten your drill machines.

Drill bits bundled with the machines usually have poor qualities. So you still need to buy extra drill bits with better qualities.

The do-it-yourself class to professional class have warranties, but the lowest do not have any.

For prices, it depends on your budget and needs. For usual home uses, the do-it-yourself class and lower should suit your needs. But if you use drilling machines for hobby, you should consider the professional class.

Spare part availabilty should be put into your consideration. Because, after the warranty expired you still need to able to find the spare parts. So if your machines broken, they could be fixed. The do-it-yourself to professional class usually have warranty of spare part availibility. So you should be able to find it easily. But it would not count if it already pass for 10 years. The price of original spare parts are obvious, they are expensive. In Indonesia, Makita, Bosch, and Hitachi have many pirated spare parts, but it is only for several fast-moving types. So it is one of ‘advantage’ if you want to find a lower price parts. The lowest class machines usually built from pirated design of fast moving types of well known brands. So finding the spare part should be easy, but it may not be worthed. Since buying a new one sometimes much more cheaper than fixing it.

I hope this article can help you choosing the your impact drills. It all depends to your needs and budget. Happy shopping!
